Going Solar

Q: I'd like to amp up the look of our landscaping by adding accent lighting. Solar lighting seems to be hot right now. I'm all for conserving energy, including my own. Are solar lights easy to install and are they reliable?
Steve Watson responds...

Outdoor solar lighting

D.I.Y. Advisor: Outdoor Solar Lighting

A: If you're considering outdoor lighting options, think solar. Installing solar lighting is an environmentally friendly home improvement project that not only adds curb appeal, but also helps you save money. Best of all, you can find everything at your local True Value hardware store.

Glowing Reviews
Outdoor solar lighting continues to grow in popularity for several reasons. For starters, solar lights are versatile. They can be used to illuminate gardens, paths, pools and other landscaped areas around your home. Today's models are also bright enough for most applications, stay illuminated longer and can last for years with minimal maintenance.

Environmentally Friendly
Solar lights gather energy from the sun and store it in a rechargeable battery, which means they don't add a cent to your electric bill. Built-in sensors trigger the lights to turn on at dusk. Most use long-life LED bulbs that emit a soft, subtle glow in white or amber that's compatible for a variety of landscaping uses.

Easy to Install
Unlike low voltage outdoor lighting, solar lights operate require no wiring. Most models require a minimum number of hours of direct sun exposure to operate properly. Choose a location that positions the solar panel for optimal sun. Depending on the model, lights can either be staked into the ground or mounted on the side of your house or garage. Installation takes just minutes. Best of all, if the area is not catching enough sun, it's simple to relocate the light for better efficiency.
